Leon Shoats
Employment Specialist

Prior to my employment with the Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Office, I provided employment related services to a variety of populations. My experience includes employment with state employment services and private non-profit agencies. I have always enjoyed assisting community members obtain and retain employment. A good stable job with opportunities for advancement not only provides for families immediate needs such as housing and food, but also enables them to make plans for the future and achieve their dreams.

I have worked with Refugee families for 10 years. From the beginning, I have counted myself as privileged to have the opportunity to work with them. The refugee families come from many traumatic and tragic circumstances. They arrive with many challenges to overcome, such as language barriers, limited work skills, and adjusting to a new culture. I am in awe of their drive and determination to have a successful resettlement and a good life in the USA. From the time that I first meet the families in our Employment Orientation Workshop, I am energized by their excitement, desire to work, bright eyes and happy faces. I do my best to connect them with jobs that meet their current needs, offer a path for advancement and most importantly maintain their dignity. My goals are that each family becomes self-reliant, is integrated into the community and is able to enjoy the many opportunities that are available. I am blessed to have the chance to be of service to our refugee families.
