In my youth, watching heart wrenching news stories of refugees, particularly the children, whose lives were torn apart by war, was the catalyst that moved me toward refugee work.   As an adult, I had the opportunity to start the first ESL program for refugee children in Burke County NC, and later founded, and was executive director of, a nonprofit that assisted Hmong refugee children. I went back to college to earn a degree in Cultural Anthropology to better serve the refugee community.

I started working for Catholic Charities Refugee Resettlement Office in 1998 in the Employment Department. As an Employment Specialist, I am aware that the newly arrived refugees have very little left in their lives but their hope, their spirit and their dignity. At Charlotte-Douglas airport, when they step off their plane, they step into our care. The wrong job can destroy their hope, break their spirit and damage their dignity. I take seriously the importance of placing them in jobs where they are respected, can advance, and become self-sufficient. Being able to serve the refugee community through Catholic Charities is a blessing and a dream come true to a little girl motivated by refugee stories on the news.
