I began working with Catholic Charities in October 2017, but I have coordinated volunteers throughout my career. In my role now, I recruit and organize volunteers for our reception area, food pantry, clothing closet, holiday assistance programs, and other projects in the Western Regional Office. Prior to Catholic Charities, I was employed with a community action partnership to help families in need and previously worked with international exchanges, all of which relied heavily upon volunteers. I also have been on the other side (as a volunteer myself) and taught English to newly arrived immigrants and refugees. Throughout all of these experiences, the most important part was always the human connection and the ability to make a change in one’s community simply by sharing one’s time.  These interactions come in all forms – providing a hot cup of coffee on a cold day, helping locate a much-needed community resource, and sometimes simply saying hello at the welcome desk. Our volunteers always strive to cultivate these simple but important connections while serving our community. At the Western Regional Office, in Asheville, a volunteer is often the first point of contact our participants have with programs and the work here is impossible without them.
