As the Volunteer Coordinator for the Catholic Charities Charlotte office, I am responsible for identifying and on-boarding new volunteers, partnering with agency staff to identify where volunteer opportunities are most needed and working with community partners to share Catholic Charities mission.  After retiring from a 25 year career in banking, I felt called to give back to my community and I began a second career in social services.  My heart is with issues facing migrants and refugees and after hearing Pope Francis speak in the Fall 2015 in Philadelphia, I began to pursue a work opportunity in refugee outreach.  As a primary refugee resettlement agency, Catholic Charities Charlotte office was a great place for me to begin my second career.  I love meeting new people interested in welcoming our refugee neighbors and helping them find the right program that pairs their interests with the needs of the agency’s refugee office staff and clients.  My favorite program is the year-long refugee mentorship program that pairs a newly arrived refugee family with an American friend.  Watching friendships form that are beautifully transformative for both the volunteer and the refugee family provide me with a great hope that good people, “welcoming the stranger,” can make our world a better place one person at a time.
